How it works
What happens during a Menlumin screening
Here is each step, what it measures, and what happens to your answers afterwards.

Before anything is recorded
You’ll see what the screening collects and why, and you agree to it first.
Your consent is saved to your account history, and you can withdraw it later. The eye scan is optional, and skipping it doesn’t stop you finishing. Questions can be read aloud and answered by voice, in English, Spanish, French or Chinese.
The four steps in detail
Step 1 of 4
Eye scan (optional)
Menlumin asks about your lighting, then uses your camera to photograph both eyes. A pupil detection model measures the width and height of each pupil in millimetres and compares the average with typical ranges for that light: roughly 2 to 4 mm in bright light and 4 to 8 mm in dim light. The reading is labelled normal, dilated or constricted.
Pupil size also changes with light, tiredness and many prescribed medicines. The scan is one signal among several and never a verdict on its own.
Step 2 of 4
WHO’s questionnaire
The Alcohol, Smoking and Substance Involvement Screening Test was developed by the World Health Organization. It asks how often you’ve used each substance, whether you’ve felt a strong urge to use, and whether use has caused problems with health, relationships, the law or money. Your answers give a risk level for each substance.
The questionnaire identifies risk. It doesn’t diagnose addiction.
Step 3 of 4
Risk Index follow-up
When the initial screening questionnaire points to high risk, Menlumin continues with questions based on the risk Index. They cover medical, legal and psychological areas, so a clinician can see how substance use connects to the rest of your life.
You only see these questions if your earlier answers call for them.
Step 4 of 4
Lab check

If you’ve had a urine drug screen (UDS), you can upload the lab report. The results are extracted and placed beside what you reported, so a reviewing clinician can see where the two agree and where they differ.
A mismatch isn’t an accusation. Timing, prescriptions and test limits can all explain differences, and a clinician looks at them in context.
Your result, and what you can do with it
- A risk level with a plain-language summary and a recommended next step.
- A PDF report you can download and share with anyone you choose.
- A clinician review. If you’re linked to a doctor on Menlumin, they check the AI’s interpretation, and you’re notified when the review is done.
- A starting point for daily check-ins and progress tracking in your dashboard.
What Menlumin is not
Menlumin is a screening and support tool. It doesn’t diagnose, prescribe or replace a doctor, and its AI-generated reports are advisory until a qualified professional reviews them. If you’re in immediate danger, call your local emergency number.
